My friend ERNIE FLETES of LA PUENTE, CA is currently in a contest to win a cover on Runner’s World Magazine and needs your votes to win. I met Ernie in college while we were studying in Edinburgh. Every morning, while the rest of us were waking up hung-over, Ernie would put on his headphones (Britney Spears!) and head out running. He’d come back sweaty and beaming, full of energy and life. Over the years, Ernie’s been running marathons and half marathons, usually in amazingly cute and creative costumes. His story and his positive energy are fantastic and it would be great if he could win this cover contest. I’ve included some of his story here, but please click through and vote for him! And reblog! Thanks!!
How did you start running?
During college I began walking laps around the track sporadically. Up until age 20, I had been obese and lazy when it came to anything athletic and never would have imagined I was capable of anything great. Walking around the track evolved to running one lap and walking one lap. Each day I tried to add one lap or to run faster than the day before. Within a year’s time, I was running 8 miles nonstop within 60 minutes!!! I lost a total of 100lbs within that year; no coach, no audience, no pills, no one else, but ME!!!!!
What is the personal running accomplishment you are most proud of?
In October 2012, I won the Grand Prize in the Costume Contest at the Rock-N-Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon. Two of my favorite passions in life are running and dressing in a costume (I actually have a holiday calendar out). I sewed a custom Dorothy outfit, bedazzled my Ruby Red Asics and carried Toto 13.1 miles to the finish line to receive a PR and in the Top 3% overall! Out of thousands of costumed contestants, I was chosen as BEST!!! I may not be the fastest runner, but I’d like to think I’m the fastest, most-creative runner out there!!! http://covercontest.runnersworld.com/entry/757/
